Request: Please Bring Back the 3.5mm Headphone Jack in Future Phones

Hey Nothing Team and fellow community members,

I’ve been a big fan of Nothing’s design philosophy—minimal, functional, and user-centered. The aesthetics, transparency, and software experience are refreshing in a world of generic devices.

That said, I (and many others, I believe) really miss one thing: the 3.5mm headphone jack.

While wireless audio is great, it’s not always ideal—especially for audio purists, musicians, and those of us who still rely on wired headphones for latency-free, high-quality sound. Dongles can be clunky, easy to lose, and just don’t feel like the Nothing way of doing things.

Would love to see a future Nothing Phone (maybe Phone (3)?) bring back the headphone jack without compromising your sleek design. It could set a new standard by merging style, user choice, and practicality—something the industry has been neglecting.

Anyone else in favor of this?

tusharakharia I must admit, I’ve been using wired headphones recently (USB-c) and it does become annoying when you want to charge your device but need to choose between charging and music so, would love to see a 3.5mm headphone jack at some point 🙂

The 3.5mm jack is disappearing, but a simple USB-C adapter keeps the superior sound quality alive (costs $2). I rock wired headphones daily on my NP2 with an adapter that stays connected to the headphones.

I have one in my previous phone and use it all the time with my Koss Porto Pros. The sound quality is stellar.

it does become annoying when you want to charge your device but need to choose between charging and music

I feel like this was addressed really nicely by Raymond in one of the latest Nothing Videos over on YouTube here.

Whilst I initially missed the headphone jack once everyone followed Apple’s lead, I find the convenience of wireless earbuds/headphones much nicer. No wires to get in my way, whilst commuting, or jogging etc.

Plus, the additional space for battery is a huge benefit. Also, the wireless market is saturated with great options, ones with great ANC, great codecs for High-Res audio etc. Which is more than enough for someone like me, the regular consumer, who isn’t an audiophile and requires a Quad DAC etc for my Audio enjoyment from a Phone.

Just my two pennies worth, but I feel it would be regressing to add back the headphone jack.

I agree however, @teenageengineering ..having just unboxed the Nothing Phone 3A (which is awesome, by the way), I was reminded of one small but significant omission: the good old 3.5mm headphone jack.

Sure, tech is moving forward. Wireless audio is getting better every year. But let’s be real—there’s something effortlessly cool about analog gear. Especially for musos and audio lovers who still rely on high-quality wired headphones for zero-latency sound and the ability to plug straight into new and exciting audio apps without messing around with adapters.

Yes, USB-C to 3.5mm is an option. But no matter how advanced a phone is, the need for a dongle just takes a tiny bit of shine off the experience.

I’m not complaining. The 3A is still a 5-star device in my eyes. But if I could influence future design choices, I’d absolutely vote to bring back the headphone jack. It’s that final 1% of cool that tips something from “great” to “iconic.”

PPan I don’t know what you’re trying to link to, because that link just takes me to a login page. You might try using words to state what you mean in the future.

To that end, I’m going to guess you’ve linked to a different type of dongle accessory. This still represents a solution in search of a problem. The minijack is inexpensive, reliable, high performance, and tiny. It’s also trivial to waterproof. On top of all that, any additional dongle accessory is just another thing to buy, and another thing that can break or be lost. I already have a great pair of headphones; I shouldn’t need more junk just to be able to plug them into an audio source.
