I personally understand both sides of the debate, since i do find usefulness on opening and closing apps quickly without needing to transition from one screen to another (MIUI implements floating apps and things like quick notes beautifully, in my opinion) .
Now, bias aside, I think the healthiest way to solve the dilemma between users who need the sidebar and users who don’t want it because “bloat”, is to simply expose the OS activity for launching apps directly on floating mode. That way, if users really want to add the feature, they could just do it through third-party sidebar apps that can shortcut said activities.
No idea if there’s hard-coded restrictions for those, or if it posits a privacy issue, but, a priori, seems pretty doable.
