To Nothing or not to Nothing?

Hello from a long time OnePlus user. I have had multiple OP devices, and ever since Carl left, phones and OS went down the drain. No one listens to community anymore. No more parking shelf widget, you can’t load custom icon packs fully (just first 200-300 icons and it gets stuck), OS keyboard isn’t learning your type style anymore etc… Prices went up like mad, and camera is only updated well until next phone comes out. After that - nothing.

Now, I am thinking of switching to Nothing once 3 is revealed. I have some doubts, so I came here for advice. My phone is 90% of the time on silent, and I believe glyphs are a perfect tool to make it be on silent 100% of all the time. I am not taking any pro photos, nor am I gaming on the phone. It’s used for some social networks for like an hour a day, and the rest is casual messaging, music and browser usage.

I do intend to purchase a device which will be used for 3-4 years at least. Now, should I be looking for something in CMF range, 2a range, or proper 2 phone range spec / price (keeping in mind I’d like to use it for several years).

What are your experiences?

Marko Hey!

If you have high expectations, get the Phone (3). Since (2) does not have that much of software support left, there is no need to get it anymore keeping the 3-4 year usage in mind.

If you have lower budget, buy (2a) Plus or wait for a budget Phone (3). (Which i believe is coming)

Wouldnt suggest getting a CMF phone since they dont have glyphs, if you need them.

Phone 3 must be close to be released and I suggest you should wait and see the new features of the Phone 3 and also right now Phone 2 has only 3 years of support so it is not that long period and if the Phone 3’s support will be longer it will be a better option for you.

and even if it didnot bring much Phone 2’s price may drop a little then.

True, but can someone confirm the glyphs are actually as useful as I think? For example, dedicated notifications, dedicated calls from specific people, etc…?

Marko Yes it is useful I have been using the Phone 2 for like a month and I have the flip to glyph on and sometimes i don’t even notice that i got a notification because the phone didnot make a sound only the glyphs lighted for a second but the important notifications I notice their permenant light of the essential notification.

But also I feel that if someone will always put the phone in front of him and he noticed the light it might not make a difference for him if he isn’t willing to leave the phone if it is not important

Marko Glyphs are very useful for me. Essential notifications show the most important messages you want. There is flip to glyph, which silents your phone when you put it screen down. I use glyph timer everyday. There is nothing i would say isnt useful. You can also create your own ringtones and change different glyph patterns for different contacts. Also a bit of fun, music visualization. And of course the glyph torch, can be used as a fill light when taking photos and also as a normal torch. Also a progress glyph strip, which shows when Uber is ready or food delivery.

Marko I treat the gliph like I used to treat a multi-color notification LED. It works great in that respect. I have a screen protector on my screen so I don’t worry about scratches. Plus, the phone doesn’t distract me with the AOD screen when I’m not using it.

Thank you all for prompt answers. Another thing, it seems like the community isn’t cancer like OP is past few years, so that’s another bonus.

Carl Nowadays any sort of criticism related to the OS (UI aesthetics and copy paste, update delay , etc) are simply deleted by the moderators. I’m a 1+ 11 user (for now) and when the update was delayed , lot of users raised questions about it and every thread got deleted. Every OS update thread by “Winkey W.” has users complaining about bringing back old OOS , bugs . When users complain about bugs mods say to report it by dialing *#800# but it is practically useless I’ve reported a bug since OOS 13 and currently I’m using OOS 15 still the bug is left unaddressed. Some people also keep this in their bio : “therefore we will customize the unified OS specifically for 1+ … keeping it as clean and lightweight as before”

Well, here’s the thing… Except the samples provided above, I can also give my 2 cents: I remember posting bugs in the bug section, there was absolutely no response from anyone, it’s like the bug forum is there just for shows. If you ask for help, you get replies such as “gtfo buy a Samsung” or “lol” from other users. If you try to help someone with a workaround or a step by step solution often you get “you think I’m a retard?” replies etc… I am not saying majority of people are like that, but the ones who are, they are always loudest. I simply stopped posting there. There was also a thread for OP12 phones brought from Shenzen (1TB verision) which I updated regularly, considering the region lock fix. That thread got deleted and I got called a stupid user because it locks your phone after 10 restarts. I am still writing from that phone and I restarted it at least 50 times. You get 0 credibility. In addition, for years people are asking for simple things to be back (such as pinch / expand to get to hidden apps, instead of #0000#, but nothing. Asking for a simpler csll app mod skinned to android 10 because it was slick, but no response. Asking for simple yet useful widgets to be back (parking for example) - again nothing. Asking to fix the issue with icon packs not fully loading - ignored again. Hidden apps don’t work properly in OOS15. It’s like they’re deprived of functionality and internet access. If I hide McDonalds app, it gets stuck. If I unhide it, it works without issues. OP 7 Pro and android in that time had no such problems. It simply hid the app so you could have a cleaner UI, which would not be clogged uo by many icons, without affecting the app functionality. OOS went from great to OK, and then to bad.

The fact that you actually replied on a random thread tells the world everything. Some people care about the product and brand, some do not. It’s very clear to me what’s my next action once (3) comes out.

The OS is simply not what it used to be, especially the part where keyboard doesn’t learn your way of typing to get more precise with time (OP3 and OP7 Pro were awesome for that), and people aren’t heard anymore. So far, only the volume switch is the thing holding me onto the phone, but it’s time to go. Even dbrand gave up on making cases due to huge sales drop and demnad.

Carl I was considering buying 1+ before my Phone (2), visited the community. There was so dry conversations and no responses when i was asking how the phones are. Then i saw Nothing as a very interesting company. Visited this community and staying here.
